Give hot spots the cold shoulder

Hot and cold aisle arrangement is essential to the composition of any efficient data centre. With many data centres struggling to accommodate an increasing amount of servers in a limited amount of space, the risk of IT equipment failure due to overheating poses a very real and expensive problem. Containment ensures the cold air is not mixed with the hot air and hot spots are reduced.

With 75% of server failures occurring in the top third of racks thanks to the fluctuating temperatures (upwards of eight degrees in many cases), Hot and Cold Aisle separation is now widely regarded as one way of the most efficient ways to address the issue of increasing temperatures within data centres. The decision between the type of containment solution employed: Hot or Cold, within the data centre is ultimately made dependent on the size of the room, number of cabinets, orientation of cooling and heat load amongst other things.

Benefits to Aisle Containment can be experienced from day one:

  • Reduced cooling costs
  • Increased space utilisation / rack densities
  • Payback inside two years

Both Hot and Cold Aisle Containment can be easily retro-fitted to existing installations and offer speedy payback.

Hot aisle containment

If your data centre is fitted with a ceiling plenum, using an air return system may be the best option for you to control your room temperatures and reduce operating costs. This solution is seeing increasing use in high density installations given it allows you to focus cooling on where it is needed most.

2bm is able to supply a bespoke Hot Aisle Containment solution with the design and configuration subject to a detailed pre-installation technical site survey by our installation team.

Roof system options are available; Fixed/Sealed Roof Panels can be installed to channel the hot air into the ceiling void, and hence recycle the hot air to the chillers without contamination into the data hall.  Cabinet and roof support infrastructure, infill panels, support posts, and bespoke items can also be designed and manufactured as required.

Cold aisle containment

Cold Corridor ™ is a simple and easy way to address rising temperatures in your data centre. By tackling the issue of cooling, which represents one of the biggest running costs in data centres and computer rooms, Cold Corridor effectively allows you to turn the cooling up, spending less money in the process.

The solution minimises this contamination by enclosing the cold aisle; adding a roof at the top of the racks, doors at each end of the aisle and filling the gaps between the servers in the racks with blanking panels.

As the cold air cannot now escape or be contaminated by the hot air the result is an almost constant temperature at both the top and bottom of the racks. In fact, compared to the more traditional approach, the temperature shift when employing a Cold Corridor design can be as little as one degree from top to bottom.

The Benefits

  • Increased energy efficiency
  • Improved space utilisation
  • Increased server reliability
