Giving ‘hot spots' the Cold Shoulder
With many data centres struggling to accommodate an increasing amount of servers in a limited amount of space, the risk of IT equipment failure due to overheating poses a very real and expensive problem.
Hot and Cold Aisle separation is a widely regarded as one way to address the issue of increasing temperatures. However Hot/Cold Aisle Separation on its own is not sufficient.
Hot air contamination is inevitable, resulting in higher temperatures at the top of the room, sometimes as much as eight degrees when compared to that at the bottom.
The Cold CorridorTM
The Cold CorridorTM solution minimises this contamination by enclosing the cold aisle; adding a roof at the top of the racks, doors at each end of the aisle and filling the gaps between the servers in the racks with blanking panels.
As the cold air cannot now escape or be contaminated by the hot air the result is an almost constant temperature at both the top and bottom of the racks. In fact, compared to the more traditional approach, the temperature shift when employing a Cold CorridorTM design can be as little as one degree.
The Benefits
Anyone installing a Cold CorridorTM solution will start to see the benefits from day one:-
- Significant energy saving
- Improved space utilisation
- Increased server reliability
By tackling the issue of cooling, which represents one of the biggest running costs in data centres and computer rooms, Cold CorridorTM effectively allows you to turn the cooling up, spending less money in the process.
Payback
Based on existing 2bm installations, an eighteen month to two year payback on investment in Cold CorridorTM technology is not uncommon, as a direct result of reduced cooling costs.
As temperature control is no longer an issue, Cold CorridorTM also allows you to put more kit, such as blade servers, into each rack, something which would previously have been impossible due to concern over temperature.
New Build or Retro-fit
Cold CorridorTM is not just limited to new build data centres. The benefits are equally applicable to existing facilities subject to a very quick site survey.
