Thirty five golf enthusiasts who took part in the 2bm Longest Day Golf Challenge look set to beat their £5,000 fund raising target for the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres to help them towards reaching the £2 million needed to build a centre in the grounds of Nottingham City Hospital.
Nottingham-based data centre solution specialists 2bm organised the 16-hour golf marathon at three local golf courses – The Nottinghamshire in Cotgrave, Beeston Fields and Ruddington Grange who all donated tee times in support of the charity.
The players teed off at 4.30am on Monday and finished as the sun set that evening.
Sponsorship money is still coming in and organisers are then planning to hand over a bumper check to the charity who responded to a request by 2bm through the Nottingham Evening Post for a worthy recipient of the annual event.
2bm Director Jason Preston said: “Anyone who says that golf is just a nice stroll in the countryside has obviously never spent 16 hours on the course!
“Despite the aches and pains, we are all delighted that last year’s charity donation of £5,000 has already been surpassed and that we have been able to support the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre appeal doing what we all love best.
“We were thankfully blessed by the weather which ensured that everything went smoothly – apart from the odd wayward shot!”
Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres support anyone affected by cancer with professional advice, relaxation classes and help with practical challenges.
Sharon King, community fundraiser with Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres said: “The golfers have done a magnificent job and have contributed greatly to the appeal.
“It’s quite scary to think that in the UK someone is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes. With a Maggie’s centre in Nottingham we are here to help pick up the pieces and help sufferers live with their diagnosis and receive essential help and support.”
