What is Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)?

PUE is a measure of how efficiently a computer data centre uses its power; specifically, how much of the power is actually used by the computing equipment (in contrast to cooling and other overhead).

It was developed by the Green Grid and put simply it is the ratio of total amount of power used by a computer data centre facility to the power delivered to computing equipment.

What is a good PUE?

An ideal PUE is 1.0. But this is almost impossible achieve. Typically we come across PUE levels in excess of 2.0 which highlights vast scope for improvement (and cost savings).

Understanding your PUE

What is the importance of understanding your PUE? Well put simply it’s a great starting point and one that will, over time allow you to monitor and track the impact of any changes you have introduced to your data centre.

At 2bm we can help you achieve both

  • Our team can assist you in gathering the data in calculate your current PUE
  • We can then work with you to introduce measures to reduce this figure

And you would be surprised just how quickly this can be achieved. It does not have to be major change. Our experience suggests that it is possible to get below a PUE of 2.0 without making significant or costly changes.
